A minute of silence was immediately observed in the National Assembly, as well as in the Senate, where the death of Jacques Chirac was announced in session. The industrialist François Pinault, close friend of the couple Chirac, said in a statement of his "infinite sadness".

Aged 86, Jacques Chirac was weakened since his departure from the Elysee Palace in May 2007. He had been hospitalized several times, particularly in December 2015 due to a general weakening. He had also suffered a stroke in 2005. According to his relatives, the former head of state had been very distressed by the death of his eldest daughter, Laurence, in April 2016. The last appearance of Jacques Chirac at an official ceremony went back to November 21, 2014, during the presentation of the Fondation Chirac's award at the Quai Branly museum. He had appeared diminished, his hand on the shoulder of his bodyguard. The then president, François Hollande, and Alain Juppé, his former prime minister, had been keen to accompany the former head of state.
